Check your progress Questions

6.1-

1. (a.) The main idea of Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" was to tell the Americans that they should govern themselves. (b.) I think that "Common Sense had a big impact on colonists because Thomas Paine was not afraid to take action in what he believed and he also wasn't afraid to call King George a royal brute.

2. (a.) The major parts of The Declaration of Independence is the natural rights, list of grievances, and dissolving the bonds. (b.) The list of grievances against the king was so important because it stated how much the colonists hated the king.

4. Preamble is an introduction

5. Resolution is a formal statement of opinion

6. Grievances are formal complaints

6.2-

1. (a.) In Trenton, December 1778 the Americans had a ringing victory. Washington's army captured almost a thousand British mercenaries. Washington had a clever trick to escape. At night he lit campfires and left few soldiers there and moved on to attack another British force. (b.) Washington's actions at Trenton proved him as  a loyal leader!

2. (a.) Three important results from the battle of Saratoga were Large Patriot victory, British lost spirits of easy win, and Patriots regained hope. (b.) If The Americans had lost the battle, The British would have overpowered (At least that's MY opinion).

4. Mercenaries are soldiers who get paid to fight in battle, so the answer to the statement: German mercenaries helped the British because they believed the king should rule the Americans -is false!

5. An alliance is when a formal agreement between two powers to work together toward a common goal, so the answer to the statement: After making an alliance with the Americans, France contributed money and arms to the patriots -is true!

6. Cavalry are units of troops on horseback, so the answer to the statement: The cavalry soldiars fired at the British soldiers from the ground before running away-is false!

6.3-

1. (a. and b.)Wahington's policy toward African American soldiars changed because Washington soon relized that because he wasn't letting African American's join the army, he was getting outnumbered by the British!

2. (a.) The american navy faced many challenges like having to battle a large British fleet. They made small hit and run attacks but could not defeat the British. Then they faced the challenge of not able to enter or leave the American ports. (b.) John Paul Jones was considered such a great American hero because he didn't give up. Even when his ship was torn to shreds. His crew finally got the ship Serapis to surrender and that was known as the most famous naval battle!

4. Enlist- Sign up for duty. (EX:) I enlisted for the school play
civilian- People not in the military. (EX): A civilian crossed the street while I played tennis with my friends.
continental- Paper money. (EX:) Congress printed continentals to fund the war.
privateer- armed civilian ships that had their government's permission to attack enemy ships and keep their goods. (EX:) A privateer shot down an enemy ship and stole their goods.

6.4.

1. (a.) The military strategy that defeated Cornwallis in Yorktown was the Guerrila strategy. (b.) The one important factor that contributed to the American victory at Yorktown was that The Americans and French worked together to defeat Cornwallis.

2. (a.) The provisions of The Treaty of Paris were that there were now boundries at the Atlantic on the east, Canada on the north, Mississippi River on the west, and Florida on the south. (b.) Setting the nation's west border was important economically to the new country becausethat would be a main water source.

4. The advantages guerrillas had against larger forces was the hit and run idea and with more people, you damage a bigger section of them.

5. Americans considered Benedict Arnold to be a traitor because he used to be American, but didn't like the fact that he didn't get included in the Declaration of Independence so he went to the British side.

Lee Resolution. What was it about? What was it?

Lee Resolution was written by Richard Henry Lee also known as the Resolution of Independence, was an act of the Second Continental Congress stating that the united colonies were to be independent of the British Empire.

The Lee Resolution contained three parts: A declaration of independence, a call to form foreign alliances, and a plan for confederation. The document that is included on page 22 is the complete resolution in Richard Henry Lee's handwriting. It was officially created on July 4th!

Well, what were the two best sentances in The SS Textbook Chapter 6?

My two favorite sentances from the book were-

-"But the British offer of freedom to enslaved people made Washington change his policy." on page 187
because without the Native Americans, The Patriots would have been easily defeated!

and

-"The news from Yorktown caused shockwaves in Braitan." on page 193
because this was the ending point of the war (Finally!) and The British and Patriots finally got to relax. This showed the start of the Treaty of Paris!

Thomas Paine

I think Thomas Paine was the most important person in the American Revolution. I think he made a real difference! When he wrote "Common Sense" he was not afraid to insult King George! He was brave! When he wrote "The Crisis", he made citizens realize how selfish they have been and how they should be respecting their army.

Why did The Americans Win?

Well, I think they won because of their alliances with other countries like France and Spain!
With those alliances they had the supplies they needed, extra troops, and more confidence. Without the alliances the Americans would have been toast from the beginning! Plus, the British made some bad choices! Like in The Battle of Saratoga. Lastly, The Americans had a home field advantage which played a big role in this war because it helped the Patriots with resources, food, clothing, and shelter!

Blogging?

I personally love to use the computer rather than write journal entrys and what not!

Especially because I can type faster than I write! Also, people can come to my blog and comment on what
I have to say. They give me big ideas and can connect to my experiances. In my opinion, there are no disadvantages with a blog as long as your having fun with it!
